“No-One Ever Told Me That”
We know it’s OK to make mistakes.
We also know that there are acceptable mistakes and unacceptable mistakes. It’s very much up to the leader to ensure that the team member doesn’t make unacceptable mistakes. I’m hoping any leader avoids putting employees at risk of making irretrievable mistakes.
But when a mistake occurs and the response from the worker is, “Oh, no one ever told me that”, – that is the worst.
Sure – no matter the Team Member experience on the job, there will be a process or a function that is not fully understood. The expected response is to seek understanding. People who respond with “no one told me about that” are a concern. The response implies an excuse, not an intent to accept that they need to learn something new. It shows a lack of accountability and an expectation that understanding is provided to them rather than sought after.
The “no one ever told me that” response often comes from embarrassment. The worker feels it’s embarrassing not to know. These people are dangerous. They need to be open to feedback on their work. They need to be open-minded when questioned or contradicted.
Do you ever mislabel a “me problem” as a “them problem”?
NETWORKING
Making the Connections
David Rockfeller's Rolodex can shed a thing or two about what it means to be a prolific networker.
It turns out the former financier used a time-tested method: analogue.
In fact, Rockfeller's custom Rolodex consisted of 100,000 3x5 contact cards that stood 5 feet high!
Here's his card on Nelson Mandela:
Diligent networkers know how to create their own luck. The connectivity that ensues leads to unique job opportunities, investments - and most importantly - lifelong friendships.
APP
Tried Scribe?
Scribe records your computer actions and converts them into a step-by step process, hosted and ready to share.
Say I want to document how to write a newsletter.
I simply hit record and perform the task.
Scribe captures each behaviour.
Once I hit Stop, it creates step-by-step instructions with a description of each action and screenshot.
This is available to share via a hosted webpage.
Features like being able to edit, combine and delete steps, and zoom in on the part of the screen that's been clicked make this app pretty cool.
Great for sharing instructions remotely.
