It's Just About the Best Thing That Anyone Can Do, Does Your Company Value Humour?
Is Humour One of Your Company's Values?
Company values tend to be similar:
Teamwork
Customer service
Integrity
Operational excellence
Accountability
Nothing wrong with these – they are all valid. Actually, company values shouldn't need stating, should they? A customer experiences these, not read them in the Annual Report or on a reception poster.
But what about valuing humour as a company value?
Organisational humour is linked to:
successful leadership
increased profit
great business culture
improved problem solving
reduced stress
Why not promote the value that seems to help with just about everything your company needs to be successful?

Productivity
Great article about the changing concept of Productivity by Cal Newport
In summary,
The concept of productivity dates back to Adam Smith’s ‘Wealth of Nations’ (1776)
Productivity is defined as output produced per unit of input
When a surplus is achieved, then we have economic growth, which is what drives economic progress
Until recently, optimising systems improved productivity
But with the increase in knowledge jobs, since the 60’s, productivity has focussed on the individual’s output
This has made productivity personal - “work harder, please.”
The focus on improving productivity needs to move back to improving systems
We need to rely on systems to better allocate work so the knowledge workers are more productive as a workforce, not as individuals

‘The Emmet’ is published each week and includes bits and pieces about the world of work. We focus on the lighter side of content as work is heavy enough.
